Neodymium Magnets FAQ
Neodymium magnet grades explained
The grade number tells you how much magnetic energy the material holds, and in practice how much pull you get from a given size. N35 is the economy option, N42 the everyday standard, and N54 the strongest widely stocked. For the same dimensions N42 gives roughly 20% more pull than N35, and N52 roughly 24% more than N42. Higher grades cope less well with heat, so for warm environments choose a grade with an H, SH or UH suffix rather than simply going stronger.
What is the strongest grade of neodymium magnet?
N54 is the strongest grade we stock in volume. For the same size it gives around 24% more pull than N42 and around 48% more than N35. Grades above N54 can be custom manufacutred but come with high minimum order quantities.
How much weight can a neodymium magnet hold?
It depends on size, grade and what it is holding onto. Every listing shows an estimated maximum pull in kilograms, measured straight off thick, flat, clean steel. Real conditions give less, so allow a margin.
What is the difference between N42 and N52?
Only the strength of the material. Size, coating and shape can be identical. For the same dimensions N52 pulls around 24% harder, which is worth paying for when space is tight.
Do neodymium magnets lose their strength?
Very little under normal conditions, with losses under 1% over a decade. They lose strength quickly if overheated past their rated temperature, or if the coating fails and the magnet corrodes.
Can neodymium magnets be used outdoors?
Yes, with the right coating. Standard nickel plating suits dry indoor use. For damp, outdoor or marine conditions choose an epoxy or rubber-coated magnet, which also protects the surface it sits on.
What temperature can neodymium magnets take?
Most standard grades are rated to 80°C. H, SH, UH and EH suffixes raise that, up to around 200°C. Past the rated temperature the loss is permanent, not temporary.
