High Tempreture Magnets FAQs
How do I choose a magnet grade for high temperatures?
Match the grade suffix to your maximum working temperature, then confirm it against the datasheet for the exact part.
Neodymium grades carry a letter suffix showing how well they resist demagnetisation as they heat up: no suffix is the standard rating, then M, H, SH, UH and EH climb progressively. In this category that means N54H magnets are rated to 120°C and N52SH magnets to 150°C. For anything hotter, see samarium cobalt below.
What do the letters after a neodymium grade mean?
The number is magnetic strength and the letter is heat resistance, and the two trade off against each other.
N54H pairs a very high strength number with the H temperature rating, while N52SH gives up a little strength for the higher SH rating. That is why N52SH is rated 30°C hotter than N54H despite carrying the lower number. Our neodymium magnet grades guide sets out the full range.
When should I use samarium cobalt instead of neodymium?
Choose samarium cobalt when your application runs above roughly 150°C, or where corrosion resistance matters.
Our Sm2Co17 magnets are rated to 350°C. They deliver less pull force than a neodymium magnet of the same size, so expect to size up when you switch.
Is the maximum temperature a fixed limit?
No. The figure on each product is a guide for typical use.
The temperature a magnet actually tolerates also depends on its shape and the magnetic circuit it sits in. A thin magnet in open air will lose performance sooner than a thicker one in a closed steel circuit. If your application runs close to the limit, tell us the operating conditions and we will advise.
